Following along in an orderly fashion, I think I have established that I have not exercised very much discernment and have allowed quite a few Mean Women (and a few Mean Men) into my life. I am now allowing myself to hate the mean people in my life--not to engage in any hateful activity, just to hate them from afar and to disengage from them. Which led to the whole "healing through hatred" thingy.
And, that has led to my newfound revelation that practicing discernment in my life would be a good…

I just realized that one could get the impression, from reading my blog, that I am completely caught up in interlocking sets of vicious cliques of "Mean Women."
That is not the case--just so you know! I am not, nor have I ever been, a member of a clique. I think that a "group of friends" and a "clique" are two entirely different kettle of fish although I have not perfected my definitions of the differences in their dynamics, yet.
I am however, a "card carrying member of the ACLU." I was, that…

My "Healing Through Hatred" is going swimmingly.
But, first, let me say that people are simply terrified of hate or repulsed or both. I used to said, "Hate corrodes the vessel that carries it." Not anymore.
Friends try everything in their power to get me to use another word. They beg me to reconsider. But, I will not.
Then, they have to reassure themselves that I am not in some way self-destructive. They are convinced that I am in some magical and mysterious way harming myself just by hating…

I'm a kind of geeky lady with a partner and kitties. I enjoy board games, swimming, playing Rock Band, tinkering with my bicycle, and contemplating sewing projects. I am not a very good housekeeper.
I graduated last May with a law degree. I'm not entirely sure now why I did that, or whether it will be possible for me to practice the kind of law I had hoped (legal assistance to organizations that serve poor folks, or else just basic legal-aid type work). Right now I don't have a job and there se…

Ok, so I was laid off last year but am a highly skilled programmer. I need to find a job soon for the
Medical insurance. I think I am being passed over because I am about 100 pounds over weight. I'm ready to do something drastic like
Lap band surgery, but I doubt I can afford it. Phone interviews go great, but when I g…

We've all heard the classic story of a bride not wanting to be fat on her wedding day. Many brides resort to extreme measures that are terrible for their health, just so they don't look fat in their wedding pictures. When did we become so afraid of being fat brides? Surely fat brides look just as gorgeous and radiant on their wedding days as brides of any other body shape. Help me prove it! Join the group and upload all of your gorgeous fat bride photos for us to enjoy and admire.

I just finished reading "The Virgin Suicides" today. I am quite disappointed. I read "Middlesex", by the same author, Jeffrey Eugenides and it was one of the best books I have ever read and ever will read.
He has a really fantastic style of writing, but this story was so vague and vacant. He poetically tells the story of five girls who commit suicide, but we never really find out why. I really hoped it would be as awesome as "Middlesex", but it wasn't. He wrote Middlesex after he wrote "The Vir…

Yes it really is that simple: Corporealities (

From my first blog post explaining my choice of name:
"It embraces the idea that one only conceive of ideas from a state of embodiment. This notion draws together my main research interests, which include: representing the sexual body, non-normative sexualities, different relationship practices, body image, the fat body, food, cooking and clothing…

I spent Saturday at the conferences of ASDAH and NAAFA that were held jointly outside DC. ASDAH took up Saturday morning, the early afternoon was spent with NAAFA, and then I then went back to ASDAH for the evening presentation, and then back to NAAFA for dancing and swimming.
ASDAH's Saturday morning presentations were at times intimate to the point of being confessional, and at others totally inspiring. I loved Deb Burgard's notion of moving through the world as fat people who are sane enough…

We have begun to get glimpses at the U.S. Government-proposed “public option” in health care, and it is worse than I feared. And now ISAA is getting media requests to discuss the proposed “obesity taxes” associated with the same healthcare measures. The possibilities of the potential future are frightening.
Of course, we should be used to being made afraid. The medical and bariatric surgery industries try to make us afraid of fat, the U.S. Government tries to make us afraid of fat and just abou…

Hello all!
As you may have noticed I have been inactive on this site for ages. This is due to finishing my degree, which is now, thankfully, over.
I have also been super-depressed and am now visiting the mental health nurse and am being referred to specialists. Euwww.... I didnt think I would be back in this brain-space again and seeing mental health practitioners again. Which kinda makes the whole thing worse. So thats not great.
I am also trying to find funding to enable me to do an access…

Massive congratulations and love are due to Corinna Tomrley and Ann Kaloski Naylor whose book Fat Studies in the UK has just been published.
This is a really important book for fat activism and scholarship, not just in the UK but anywhere. Why? Because there is currently so little documentation of any depth and strength, which this book has in spades. More Fat Studies books are in the pipeline, Sondra Solovay and Esther Rothblum's magnificent Fat Studies Reader is due in November, but Fat Studi…

As my slow, painful death approaches, I have begun to ask myself: 'Why am I not doing anything?'
Well, for starters, living with my parents and not being able to drive gets in the way.
I DID have a job for a bit, but it's an employment service that is temporary; seeing as it was a paid job evaluation from the Jefferson Transitional Program. JTP is a service that helps disabled people, mentally or physically, in attaining independence and a job. I am glad that JTP has come through to finally la…
