You have just made MY day, Viv! :) Imagine a sign behind the health club desk, and in the locker rooms, saying "We welcome people of all sizes for recreation, fitness, and employment," or, "We support Health At Every Size," etc. You're right: if we…

I think this is a great idea! Sometimes people don't take action because they are too lazy, too thoughtless, unmotivated, etc. and if WE do the work, they will implement the action. Good idea!

Katie, thanks for starting this thread. I agree, there is a lot of looking down of noses at larger people (e.g. me) when I go to fitness places. Not entirely, but there can be a fair amount. I think that places where there is less class snobbery mi…

Nina, sorry to hear the phobia/fear of phobia stuff is rearing its ugly head. I do understand that one. Do you go to the bike shop currently, for other things? Perhaps if you went in and just got to know some of the people, you would find out who's…

Hmmm... I have never worked with a trainer. I have never joined the Y or a local athletic club because I did not want to exercise with all of the compulsive exercisers wearing clothing that make me feel like I am in a brothel. How judgmental is that…

who am i and what am i into

A little bit about me:

- im an artist, zine maker, comic maker

- i write about fat, family and random nonsense.

- my comics are autobiograhical

- i love to dance!

- I craft like mad, right now i am doing some weaving (badly).

My zine is available through manifesta distro and you can see some of my comics at http://kateisabeast.livejournal.com

Activism wish/aims list;
I would like to communicate to fat activists within the UK (as i havent much so far, not that I am adverse to speaking to people elsewhere I just want to build up my community at home as well).

I want to make more art and zines based on fat/body based issues.

I want to finish my damn dissertation on fat, health and activism. Done!

I want to find ways of discussing fat with people. I guess that comes under the art/zines thing.

I want to help myself and others not feel ashamed of there bodies when they play sports. At the moment i feel i cant be as active as I would like because of the way I am viewed by health/fitness professionals. I love playing netball and other team sports but am unable to at the moment.

- if anyone has advice/experience regarding how to deal with these matters (or are in the same position) I would love to hear from you!
x

Been away, but now im back......

Hello all!

As you may have noticed I have been inactive on this site for ages. This is due to finishing my degree, which is now, thankfully, over.

I have also been super-depressed and am now visiting the mental health nurse and am being referred to specialists. Euwww.... I didnt think I would be back in this brain-space again and seeing mental health practitioners again. Which kinda makes the whole thing worse. So thats not great.

I am also trying to find funding to enable me to do an access… Continue

We seek two new members to join the current four living in a housing co-operative on the cusp of

Invasion of the Chubsters-- Fucking Amazing

It was an excellent night, full of amazing bois and grrls and I thoroughly enjoyed all of it. I met the amazing charlotte cooper and associate chubster gang members. I feel utterly delighted by the whole experience. Though I did feel like a bit of a naive, young person from the sticks. Lol. But seeing as thats what I am, I guess that is ok.
The films were so good. I need to find email addresses for some of the film makers so I can wax lyrical about their amazingness.

The night ended in dancing… Continue

I'm definitely going to the Queer Chub Harvest, as is Kirsty. I think meeting up there sounds like a brilliant idea! I'm really looking forward to this event! How's you anyways? x

I'm thinking Unskinny Bop would be a great idea. It's in my diary and everything. Now how do we go about organising meeting up and whathaveyou?? How's tricks? Life is treating me much better and I'm feeling all smiley today, though tired from a lack of sleep. xx

Hi Katie--I have been experiencing computer tragedy lately! But, it has been working for 3 days--I haven't even finished checking my email. Congrats on your degree! I hope your housing coop experience will work well for you.

Congratulations on finishing your degree!! What was it in? Any fun summer plans? The PhD is going alright in its ploddy along fashion, actually I'm feeling rather excited about it all at the moment. I'm all about the baths and reading silly books at the moment as a way to help ease those tough times (moving house for the third time this year hit me badly lately). *hugs* xx

Yes that'd be good. What's the date? How's you? Sorry I've been a bit of a lurker for so very long. Lost in a world of PhD it seems.

Thank you. I am a whiz when using a pattern. Can even take various patterns and use the different parts to create the look I want. But my niece is even more talented, she is looking at putting together a book for fat folks showing how to make your own clothes without patterns! Now that is impressive!

Well, it is early in the am and I am "fatactivist" stalking :) Katie, not having looked at your sketch with reading glasses on, I thought you had on snorkeling gear! And, I love your pics! I assume you are the lovely girl in the leggings?

PS-Totally adding you on LJ, even though I'm not on there much lately.

Um, tell me about it! Academia takes up my whole life, almost. I don't do a fraction of things I would like to because everything else is higher priority in terms of getting-on-with-my-life. Not that I really separate my activism from my academic career, but it's not the same. All the projects I'm involved in are slow-going...verrrrry slow-going. I really love all the things that you are doing--the zine looks fab! I need short, successful projects like that.
