Abundia is Coming! Abundia is Coming!

Hi All!

So, last year, I had my first wonderful experience at Abundia. I'm so excited to be going back!

The deadline for early registration is August 17th. What is Abundia? you ask? Please check it out at www.abundia.org. In short, it is a weekend gathering for fat women. But words can't even begin to tell you how fun and inspiring and uplifting this weekend is! One must experience this great community of beautiful, talented, funny, illuminating, warm, supportive women for oneself. It is a dif… Continue

Why Come Out?

There are people who ask, "well, why do they have to 'come out'?" "Why do they have to talk about it?" "Why can't they just keep that stuff private?" (Yes, there are people who ask these questions, often angrily, more often as though they are preaching rather than hoping for an answer. I've heard them many times. They sit back in their privilege and their righteous indignation and haughtily judge everyone who isn't like them. They act like they are the voice of reason as they spew their venom. I… Continue

Gender Identity, Sexual Orientation and Other Fun Stuff to Play With

This week on the radio, I heard Gene Simmons say that Adam Lambert’s career will probably be over before it even starts because of his admission that he is gay. Which is total crap. Who cares what Adam’s sexual orientation is? I love and adore that boy – and any sexuality that he wants to be! I also want to see a world in which sexual orientation does not limit the possibilities of anything that anyone could choose or strive to be, whether a rock star or President of the United States or a profe… Continue

Book Recommendations

Vivienne just asked me what 2-4 books that I would recommend for someone wanting to expand their library about the fat world. Happily, that's kind of a tough question since there are so many good books out there now. So, here is my response -- and if anybody has any other suggestions, please do post them in the comments!

(Vivienne, I'm not copying the part where I wrote for you to "specify" "specifically" about six different times, LOL! -- obviously didn't proofread very well before sending. Ug… Continue

Why Are People So Invested in Being Cruel?

So, I was interested in a link that someone shared over on the Fat Studies Board to an Australian ad that was promoting the idea that "shape discrimination" was as bad as racism, homophobia, anti-Semitism, etc. The ad itself was a series of terrible, offensive "jokes" that were supposed to convince people that fat "jokes" were just as bad. It didn't really make sense because the first three jokes were all basically genocidal, whereas the fat joke was about the lack of sexual attractiveness of fa… Continue

To me, Fat Pride is a reclamation of the fact that people are oppressed because they are fat, just as people with disAbilities, People of Colour and people who are LGBTTIQQ are oppressed. So similar to other reclamation movements, Fat Pride is about…

Howdy. Your post makes me think of all the fat and/or big people who have made me laugh, or contributed something great to the world. One of my favourite comedy actors was John Candy. Yes he was a big guy, but boy could he make me laugh till I was c…

Wow, Vivienne. Good to see you back writing! An interesting post. People actually shout at you? I don't know that I've ever had that happen to me -- well, certainly not in a social situation or on an ongoing basis. I can only think of three nasty ar…

Hi Sarah ~ I must say that I think you have overstepped -- and that you are missing the point. You can't wish for others that they be like you or "achieve" what you have "achieved". Not everyone has the same goals as you. Not everyone who exercises…

Hi Vivienne! Good to see you again! I feel like I've been out of touch a bit with a lot of people -- particularly my good friends here at FAN. :)) You always make a lick of sense. LOL I think there are millions of reasons, both conscious and uncon…

Hello Kathy! Still thinking about why people are cruel. My husband tells me that I have been over-estimating people (from the individual to humanity in general :) my entire life and then being disappointed. I think people are cruel for a number of…

Nina -- exactly! That is my favorite thing to do -- float naked under the stars. There are all kinds of nudist resorts all over the world. You can find some of them at http://aanr.com/. Glad you got your Y membership. Hope you enjoy it!

Kathy, I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your friendship and your courage. Your compassion and thoughtfulness shine through everything you say! I want to come to Abundia but I believe that my husband has bought tickets for FL at the same time. GRRRR

I have a huge conflict in my life that only gets worse with age. My DH and DD are very high maintainance folks! My husband wants to go on about 6 visits to FL a year and we have all of the obligations with a college age daughter--moving her in and out, parent weekend, having her home for the holidays, etc.

This means that I have a great deal of trouble establishing or maintaining a social life because we are gone so often and miss so many events. We have no time to do my things!

BooHoo. BTW, I hate my friends because they maintain that I am lucky that my husband wants to go anywhere and I shouldn't whine about always going where he wants to. WOW, I am in a bad mood tonight! TTYS!
