Just noticed the group and sounded kinda cool.
I'm a broadcasting graduate who has moved into Public relations with the aim of a masters degree in communications eventually.

I wanted to share this story here, where I know it will really be appreciated. My daughter is a senior in college. She is majoring in philosophy and communications studies(which is largely rhetoric) at a liberal arts university and has taken lots of gender studies classes. She is minoring in business.

This week she told me that she is in "academic and intellectual heaven." She said that no matter what she did after college or how she earned a living, she would always appreciate having had the experience of thinking and writing on a higher plane than ever before!

I am sooooo happy for her!

I am writing to invite you to come to a workshop I am organising on Friday 23 October (10-4pm). It's to mark the end of my ESRC funded obesity surgery clinic research, and aims to bring together a range of people and perspectives on the issue of obesity surgery. I will be presenting some findings from my research, and there will also be presentations from a Spanish sociologist who has been doing a similar clinical ethnography, a clinic dietician (hopefully), a patient, and a couple of social psychologists. The aim of the workshop is to get a taste of the kind of work that is being done, and to think about what the
key debates are, where the common ground (if any) is, and what / how the social sciences can contribute. I am hoping to set aside plenty of time for discussion and debate. I don't want the event to be populated only by people working on obesity surgery.

If you know of anyone else working on obesity surgery (it's surprisingly
difficult to find people), or who would just be interested more generally in the event, I'd be grateful if you could forward their details to me.

What's the link to the Fat Studies Listserv? I'm being a bit of a dunce today and can't find it. I'm afraid I find yahoo groups somewhat irritating, though that could be because I don't have one.

My memory is so quirky!

I remember that this research involved doctors, that it was published in a major journal, and that the results were shocking. If I remember correctly, doctors associated obesity with poor dental care and poor hygiene. Shocking.

My husband and I have had some very different experiences with the same doctors. We have different last names and he has a Ph.D. and I am a homemaker. (I merely have a master's degree but my doctors would never know that.)

I have always attributed the VERY different treatment we have received to our difference social status. It had NEVER occurred to me that doctors might be responding to my weight.

I saw this research on a Yahoo Group that I have since quit.

Oh, well! I found plenty of other studies with plenty of evidence of discrimination. I have never had a health care provider make a derogatory comment, though.
