Groups

Welcome to the Fat Activist Network

We are hoping this will be a central place for all fat activists to meet and network. By creating your own profile each of us can easily see what each other's focus of activism is and what we have been involved in. Anyone can create groups, post events, start discussions and post blog entries.

This is not a dating site. Please keep in mind that this is a place for people who are working on size equality and fat activism.

You can customize your page however you want. Click theme under your picture to change the layout of your page and you can physically move the content boxes around on your page.

Carrie and I are hoping that this will be a place where if you need to contact all the fat activists in one town or all the fat activist lawyers or have a call for submissions or whatever, that this will be the place you come.

This site will only be great if it is used and taken advantage of, so please create groups, discussions and profiles and please pass the word on to your activist friends.

Check it out! You can post Fat Activist Network badges on all of your favorite web haunts. Help us get the word out by clicking on Get More Badges on the lower right.

This community and website is only as good as you make it! Everyone needs to contribute by starting groups, posting events and starting discussions. Thanks! I look forward to learning more about all of you!

New Feature

Check out The Fat Feed. It is a tab at the top of the page and it compiles all the newest blog posts from various fat activists. If you have some you want added to it, let me know. Now, all you need to be up to date is visit The Fat Activist Network! :-)

Need help filling out your profile page?

Here is a link to some tutorials from the Ning site.

It isn't ideal, but hopefully it will help. Basically you can move the components of your page around. Just hold the cursor over the bar of the box and clack and you should be able to move it around.

You use the text box to introduce yourself and say what you do. Just play around and don't be afraid to click on thin… Continue

NAAFA Challenges the First Lady

NAAFA Challenges the First Lady

For Immediate Release
January 29, 2010

Oakland, CA – First Lady Michele Obama has recently announced her intention to
focus on childhood obesity prevention. NAAFA encourages the First Lady to
consider all the research before taking action and supporting any program that
may do more harm than good.

Mrs. Obama, please explore and consider the following:

• When important figures such as parents, teachers and peers in children's
social environment endorse a prefer… Continue

Sociologist Studies the Shouting World

One of the most successful coping strategies I have ever used is to pretend that I am a sociologist--or a newspaper reporter--with the assignment to study that issue that I am so anxious about.

Years ago I used this strategy when I got the assignment, as a new social worker in a hospital, to talk to a patient with a terminal neurological disorder about how she felt about dying. I pretended that I was a newspaper reporter whose goal was to really understand what it felt like to be that patient.… Continue

America's First Lady joins the "childhood obesity" fight

Yesterday America's First Lady, Michele Obama released a video to the news services and on their mailing list about how their girls' BMI's were getting too high and it was time to fight the impending obesity in the Obama girls.
By this morning, it was all over the news...

How much do we hear --- from the government, from the TV or whatever against smoking? How muc… Continue

Ugh! It is getting out of control!

Whole Foods just announced that they are giving employees who have an acceptable BMI a bigger discount than those that don't. Safeway is also doing something similar. We have to let them know that this is not acceptable. Please boycott these supermarkets and let them know that you are boycotting them. Or start a protest.

Call to Action: Helps Pass a Height / Weight Anti-Discrimination Law!

I am passing on this post from Marilyn Wann. Please send emails and letters. Each new state or city that has a law like this makes our goals a little closer.

Hi:

An important hearing on height/weight civil rights is happening in Massachusetts this month! You can help make history!!!

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Byron Rushing, is called H. 1850 — An Act Making It Unlawful to Discriminate on the Basis of Height and Weight. The hearing happens Wednesday, January 27, at 10:30am in Hearing Room A-2… Continue

Best wishes, Helen! I remember cleaning out my parent's house. It was the hardest physical labor I have ever done--for days on end! What a lot of junk!?! It was very therapeutic, though. I, too , wonder about all of us who just cannot eat in the am…
