Groups

Welcome to the Fat Activist Network

We are hoping this will be a central place for all fat activists to meet and network. By creating your own profile each of us can easily see what each other's focus of activism is and what we have been involved in. Anyone can create groups, post events, start discussions and post blog entries.

This is not a dating site. Please keep in mind that this is a place for people who are working on size equality and fat activism.

You can customize your page however you want. Click theme under your picture to change the layout of your page and you can physically move the content boxes around on your page.

Carrie and I are hoping that this will be a place where if you need to contact all the fat activists in one town or all the fat activist lawyers or have a call for submissions or whatever, that this will be the place you come.

This site will only be great if it is used and taken advantage of, so please create groups, discussions and profiles and please pass the word on to your activist friends.

Check it out! You can post Fat Activist Network badges on all of your favorite web haunts. Help us get the word out by clicking on Get More Badges on the lower right.

This community and website is only as good as you make it! Everyone needs to contribute by starting groups, posting events and starting discussions. Thanks! I look forward to learning more about all of you!

Notes

This is not a dating site

While I appreciate the people who love larger bodies, I must let any of you know who are here to meet others for romantic reasons, that this is not that kind of a site. You are in the wrong place.

There are plenty of dating sites for fat folks and their admirers. Here are a few links to fat dating sites to start you off.

If you join the Fat Activist Network i… Continue

Situation Management in the Shouting World

Following along in an orderly fashion, I think I have established that I have not exercised very much discernment and have allowed quite a few Mean Women (and a few Mean Men) into my life. I am now allowing myself to hate the mean people in my life--not to engage in any hateful activity, just to hate them from afar and to disengage from them. Which led to the whole "healing through hatred" thingy.

And, that has led to my newfound revelation that practicing discernment in my life would be a good… Continue

Just So You Know

I just realized that one could get the impression, from reading my blog, that I am completely caught up in interlocking sets of vicious cliques of "Mean Women."

That is not the case--just so you know! I am not, nor have I ever been, a member of a clique. I think that a "group of friends" and a "clique" are two entirely different kettle of fish although I have not perfected my definitions of the differences in their dynamics, yet.

I am however, a "card carrying member of the ACLU." I was, that… Continue

My Hate Group Has a Goddess

My "Healing Through Hatred" is going swimmingly.

But, first, let me say that people are simply terrified of hate or repulsed or both. I used to said, "Hate corrodes the vessel that carries it." Not anymore.

Friends try everything in their power to get me to use another word. They beg me to reconsider. But, I will not.

Then, they have to reassure themselves that I am not in some way self-destructive. They are convinced that I am in some magical and mysterious way harming myself just by hating… Continue

About Me

I'm a kind of geeky lady with a partner and kitties. I enjoy board games, swimming, playing Rock Band, tinkering with my bicycle, and contemplating sewing projects. I am not a very good housekeeper.

I graduated last May with a law degree. I'm not entirely sure now why I did that, or whether it will be possible for me to practice the kind of law I had hoped (legal assistance to organizations that serve poor folks, or else just basic legal-aid type work). Right now I don't have a job and there se… Continue

Finding a Job While Overweight

Ok, so I was laid off last year but am a highly skilled programmer. I need to find a job soon for the Medical insurance. I think I am being passed over because I am about 100 pounds over weight. I'm ready to do something drastic like Lap band surgery, but I doubt I can afford it. Phone interviews go great, but when I g… Continue

I am sorry that you had to endure such rotten treatment. I would be diplomatic about your response and just let her know that comments like that are rude, inappropriate, degrading and a form of harrassment. Look her in the eyes and let her know th...

Hi Sarah ~ I must say that I think you have overstepped -- and that you are missing the point. You can't wish for others that they be like you or "achieve" what you have "achieved". Not everyone has the same goals as you. Not everyone who exercis...
