Welcome to the Fat Activist Network

We are hoping this will be a central place for all fat activists to meet and network. By creating your own profile each of us can easily see what each other's focus of activism is and what we have been involved in. Anyone can create groups, post events, start discussions and post blog entries.

This is not a dating site. Please keep in mind that this is a place for people who are working on size equality and fat activism.

You can customize your page however you want. Click theme under your picture to change the layout of your page and you can physically move the content boxes around on your page.

Carrie and I are hoping that this will be a place where if you need to contact all the fat activists in one town or all the fat activist lawyers or have a call for submissions or whatever, that this will be the place you come.

This site will only be great if it is used and taken advantage of, so please create groups, discussions and profiles and please pass the word on to your activist friends.

Check it out! You can post Fat Activist Network badges on all of your favorite web haunts. Help us get the word out by clicking on Get More Badges on the lower right.

This community and website is only as good as you make it! Everyone needs to contribute by starting groups, posting events and starting discussions. Thanks! I look forward to learning more about all of you!

Notes

This is not a dating site

While I appreciate the people who love larger bodies, I must let any of you know who are here to meet others for romantic reasons, that this is not that kind of a site. You are in the wrong place.

There are plenty of dating sites for fat folks and their admirers. Here are a few links to fat dating sites to start you off.

If you join the Fat Activist Network i… Continue

Fat Studies in the UK is out!

Massive congratulations and love are due to Corinna Tomrley and Ann Kaloski Naylor whose book Fat Studies in the UK has just been published.

This is a really important book for fat activism and scholarship, not just in the UK but anywhere. Why? Because there is currently so little documentation of any depth and strength, which this book has in spades. More Fat Studies books are in the pipeline, Sondra Solovay and Esther Rothblum's magnificent Fat Studies Reader is due in November, but Fat Studi… Continue

My Current Status: What do I do now?

As my slow, painful death approaches, I have begun to ask myself: 'Why am I not doing anything?'

Well, for starters, living with my parents and not being able to drive gets in the way.

I DID have a job for a bit, but it's an employment service that is temporary; seeing as it was a paid job evaluation from the Jefferson Transitional Program. JTP is a service that helps disabled people, mentally or physically, in attaining independence and a job. I am glad that JTP has come through to finally la… Continue

New group on weight loss surgery

I started a group on weight loss surgery here on this network, where you can see the real story (you know what they never show on TV?). You can ask any questions in a friendly atmosphere or post your comments or experiences.

It should be noted that the three big promises given for weight loss surgery have now been disproven in scientific studies! (promises were to cure diabetes, keep weight off easily, kill the appetite).

People who have it for THESE promises or because a medical provider tell… Continue

Sound The Size Acceptance Alarm!

Here in the United States, we just celebrated Independence Day, the 4th of July. And yet, we are in uncertain times – financially, politically and most of all, in terms of our civil liberties. There is a growing feeling in America that our liberties are expendable in the pursuit of solutions to problems like the economic crisis and providing health care just as they were (and are) concerning the war on terror.

But something’s changed. Whereas past administrations were content to keep the status… Continue

I think that most of us have done our research and, combining that info with our values and priorities, have come to opinions that are unlikely to change.

I did not know who BHO was at first. I have never heard the president referred to as anything other than BO--just curious.

I'm reading a book which gives a form for a single payer health care plan as BHO et al are talking about. The author says he favors this type of health care system but that it is markedly different from what we have today because what we have toda...

@Susan - unfortunately, this type of a problem is extremely hard to diagnose - if you look it up, you will find that problems like that can be caused by many things so it's a big guessing game which one it is.

The more I think about it, the more like it seems to me that he was thinking he knows what being fat means medically. It was horrible. Thanks for the sympathy.

Susan, I am sorry to hear this was such a terrible experience. I hope it was not the doctor's response to you being fat--that would be horrible.

Vivienne, I think you are right in what you say below about the pecuniary motivation behind the b.s. I also think there is more to be said. I think it is about the beaurocratization of medicine. The creating of inviolable boundaries around everyth...
